New Magazine for Pittsburgh and Western Pa’s Latino Community Launches
Pittsburgh Media Partnership member Maria Manautou-Matos has launched Presente Pittsburgh Latino Magazine, a new publication serving Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania’s Latino community.
The magazine’s focus is on trending Latino news, events and opportunities for the fast growing demographic.
“There is a growing, vibrant community in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania with amazing leaders, businesses, artists and events which you don’t hear about often,” Manautou-Matos said. “We are helping Latinos stay connected and be informed, active participants in the region.”
Presente Pittsburgh’s website offers mutlilingual content making it inclusive for first to third-generation Latinos, with differing language abilities, as well as their English-speaking neighbors.
According to The Hispanic American Market Report by Claritas, “Hispanic Americans represent the second fastest growing ethnic group in the nation. [They] make up one-fifth of the American population overall and more than two-thirds of population growth nationwide.”
The increase is evident locally in neighborhoods like Pittsburgh’s Beechview. U.S. Census estimates put western Pennsylvania’s Latino population at 43,000 and counting. The steady rise in the minority group has created an opportunity for local organizations, government and businesses to reach this growing target audience.
“This is a vital, much needed resource for the community, which currently relies on word of mouth and social media to stay connected. Information is fragmented, and you need to navigate countless groups to get a sense of all that is happening,” Manautou-Matos said. “Our magazine informs and supports Latinos, helping them to thrive in western Pennsylvania.”
Stories are published in the magazine in three languages: English, Spanish and Portuguese.
A native Puerto Rican, Manautou-Matos has lived in the Pittsburgh region for more than two decades. She experienced the region as a young Hispanic student, a professional, and as a working mother searching for ways to stay close to her Latino roots. .
She is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and Duquesne University and an active member of the Latino community collaborating with organizations including the PMA Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Pittsburgh Hispanic Devleopment Corporation.
